I've had a Crosley Record Player for a few years now and at first I used to use it all of the time, however, since starting uni I neglected using it as much :((, when I recently rearranged my room and brought down the record player as a feature I discovered my love for it all over again. I think that collecting vinyl records is such a rewarding and satisfying thing to do, whilst also showing you a beautifully visual representation of your music taste.
As Lee (my dad) says, 'I can get that on Spotify for free though...', this is probably what you are thinking to... and yeah you'd be right, BUT there's just something much more relaxing about the sound of your favourite vinyl playing in the background. I am still building up my record collection so I haven't got many, but the ones I do have are all special to me in different ways and all songs you can find on all my go-to playlists.
I've decided to share with you the ten records in my collection, to give you inspiration for your own vinyl collection, or even just some good tunes to add to your playlist.
1.) The Kooks: The Best Of So Far
This was one of the records I was given with my record player and honestly is one of my favourites. I have always loved The Kooks and can unashamedly admit that there isn't many of their songs that I don't know off by heart! My friends got me this because they knew my love of The Kooks after we all went to see them together at the O2 Academy in 2016 (the BEST concert).
This vinyl comes with two records, each with two sides of 20 of the best songs from The Kooks (honestly just a bit. of. me.). The vinyls are just plain black but the sticker reflects the album art on the cover spelling out 'KOOKS'.
My favourite song on this record has to be 'Bad Habit' as it's always been up there with one of my favourite songs from The Kooks even though it is less well known as some of the songs on there like 'Naive' and 'She Moves in her Own Way'. It's such a good song to get up and have a little boogie to.
2. Beyoncé: Beyoncé (ofc)
First of all, as you will notice, Beyoncé does appear yet again later on in this collection and I'm honestly not ashamed to say I am obsessed with her. This was another one of the vinyls my friends got me with the record player because they were more than aware with this obsession. I can honestly say I still love it now as much as I did when they first gave it to me as I feel like Beyoncé's voice just never gets old.
This vinyl comes with two records, both with two sides. The vinyls are both black and the sticker is also black with pale pink writing which is really sleek, this tells you which songs are on each side of the vinyl. the album cover art is really simple as well, just like the vinyls. My favourite part of Beyoncé's vinyls is that she includes a photo book with themed photo shoots that she has done for each song. In my opinion, anything with Beyoncé's face on is an absolute winner for me.
My favourite song on this album has to be 'Partition', I honestly wouldn't hesitate to have this song played at my funeral.
3. The Academic: Tales From The Backseat
This is one of the lesser known albums in my collection by one of the, in my opinion, more underrated bands of our generation. If you haven't listened to the Academic, do it now, you will not regret it. I got given this vinyl for one of my birthdays because I would not stop playing their songs over and over again.
This is one of my favourite designs of all of my record collection as the record is bright red and the sticker in the middle is a picture of a grapefruit. which i think is just so cute! The album is actually signed album by each member of the band which is such a nice touch! The vinyl sleeve is also covered in pictures of The Academic as well as the lyrics to each song.
My favourite song on this album was really hard to choose (because they are all bangers), but I think I listened to 'Different' the most. I like listening to this album now as it reminds me of summer 2018 when we were actually allowed out!
Paramore: After Laughter
This is yet another album that reminds me of Summer 2018 is Paramore After Laughter, again such an upbeat album with so many good songs! I have always loved Paramore's older songs but this album is an exception.
This vinyl colour is also really pretty as it has a marble finish which is just gorgeous! The album art is also very simple and sleek to complement the vinyl with the lyrics for each song featured as well.
My favourite song on this album has to be 'Rose Coloured Boy' as it reminds me of summer and how happy I felt at that time. Although, very close second has to be 'Hard Times' as it's all about resilience and not taking yourself too seriously (something very important, especially at this point in life!).
The Wombats: Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life
An album title that has never rung more true!! The Wombats are definitely one of my favourite bands and ever since getting this vinyl I also want to add their earlier album 'Emoticons' to my collection. I love this album as it reminds me of 2019 when I was on my year out before uni and I honestly have never gotten sick of it!
The vinyl itself is a lovely transparent lilac colour with a baby blue and white sticker telling you which songs are playing on each side. this provides a stark contrast to the album art which is bolder. The vinyl sleeve is black with white text giving you the lyrics for each song.
My favourite song on this album has to be 'Turn' as it has a really good message about the healthy conflict inside a relationship. It really does capture the album's theme that beautiful people can in fact ruin your life.
George Ezra: Staying at Tamara's
If you ever want a go-to summer album this is definitely the one to go for. It is just so uplifting and positive, each song having such an important message. I got given this as a birthday present in 2018 honestly because I thought the album was pretty hahah, but the songs are so meaningful and amazing too!!
As I said the album art on the cover of this vinyl was definitely what drew me in in the first place as it is so beautiful! There is one vinyl disc with two sides which complements the album art with its black and pink sticker in the middle. There is also a white sleeve with all of the lyrics to each of the songs written in pink text.
My favourite song on this album is 'Pretty Shining People' as it is so positive and addresses how we are all one of the same :). My second favourite has to be 'Shotgun' as it reminds me of summer road trips in 2018.
Beyoncé: Lemonade
I did warn you I was a huge Beyoncé fan, therefore I just had to get this album on vinyl, and I am so glad I did!! This has to be my favourite Beyoncé album of all time as it has a song for every feeling you go through in relationships and heartbreak, from anger, denial and self-doubt to forgiveness and strength.
Of course, true to the title, this vinyl is bright yellow which just looks amazing. There are two discs, which are double sided with each sleeve covered in black and white close up photos of Beyoncé.
This album, like the Beyoncé album, comes with a full book of photos from her music videos from this album which is such a nice touch. The intention of her album was for it to be a very visual album as well as audible as the music videos really tell a story.
My favourite song on this album has to be ´Formation´ as I just find it so empowering, it´s also perfect for a good dance to cheer you up!
Rex Orange County: Pony
When I say that this album came out at the perfect time for me it sounds cliché but it genuinely did. I find that this album has so many uplifting songs on all about resilience and bouncing back, but also not taking yourself too seriously. This is what I really needed to listen to just before I started uni, to give me a bit of motivation after my year out. I also love all of Rex´s songs, I don´t think I can think of a single one I would skip if it came up on shuffle! This alone makes this my all time favourite vinyl that I own.
This album came with a plastic sleeve over the cover with ´Pony´ written in yellow font all over it which I love because even though I try to take care of my records the corners of them almost always get scuffed ://. The sleeve of the vinyl is a giant painting of his face to match the album art.
This album also came with a yellow square poster with all of the album´s lyrics on and a little yellow card with pony written all over it, which I thought was such a nice touch! There is one double sided disc with Side A and Side B written on the sticker in a little hand drawn pony (so cute!).
It is so hard to pick a favourite song from this album because all of them are genuinely amazing, but, if I had to it would be his first single '10/10', because it really is all about optimism, which we love.
Harry Styles: Fine Line
Me and my sister have been listening to this album non-stop recently, so it seemed like a bit of a no brainer to get it on vinyl. Although, now that I have it, I am really tempted to get his first album on vinyl as well... I don't care what anyone says Harry Styles has absolutely smashed his solo career and is, once again, an artist that I can listen to on shuffle and not skip any of his songs.
This album comes with two discs filled with songs on both sides (with the exception that on the last side 'Fine Line' has it's own side, honestly what a treat). Each sleeve has the lyrics to each song on which we love for a good sing along!
This also came with a massive poster of his famous naked photoshoot he did for this album (amazing). Each side of the inside of the album is covered in the fish-eye lens photos he took with Tim Walker.
My favourite song from this album was, again, hard to choose, however, I think I'd have to say 'Cherry', because it's about things not working out in a relationship and how petty you can feel about it.
And with that that concludes my record collection, as you can tell I'm pretty proud of it and definitely want to keep collecting more. I hope this inspires you to start a collection, even if it's not records, I think it is such a rewarding feeling! If that's not your thing, maybe you got some inspiration for some great summer bops to add to your playlist and keep you feeling positive this summer, whatever we will be doing!!
:))) xxx
