Book Review: My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russell

Updated: Oct 2, 2020

Recently I've been reading a lot more in an attempt to pass the time, it also makes a welcome change from all of the academic publications that I had to read for my course at Uni. I have never read a book as quick as I did with Kate Elizabeth Russell's first novel, 'My Dark Vanessa'. I was so surprised to read that this was her first novel as it was so well written and dealt with such a sensitive subject so beautifully.

This book is quite hard hitting and I would put a trigger warning on it for certain audiences, as it is based around the #MeToo movement and the affects of being a victim of child grooming. The story centers around the life of one girl, Vanessa, who is struggling to come to terms with her past as she was sexually abused by her teacher since the age of 14. It is cleverly written so that alternating chapters depict her at different ages, one going back to when she was 14, at school and experiencing the abuse, and one as an adult in her later life in her late twenties. These differing perspectives work effectively in order to show the devastating effects of the trauma of being a victim of child grooming and how this goes on to affect the way of life of the victims as they grow up and have to live with this catastrophic aftermath of being exploited at such a young age.

This book is definitely a hard one to read as it is quite chilling at times, making you feel uncomfortable in just about every chapter due to the sensitivity of the subject it addresses, but I would definitely recommend it if you want a book that that you just cant put down. (I think I finished this in about a week and it is quite a thick book as well!)

Out of ten I wouldn't hesitate to give it a solid 9.
